Hollywoods Obsession with Gold Bullion

Hollywood has been established as the global film epicentre, responsible for countless classic movies that appeal to generations of all ages. With the advancements in technology films have become more inventive with cinematography, special effects and sound. Yet with all these new avenues of technology some film themes still continue to be repeated. One such storyline that has been essentially repeated in many a film is the classic heist movie, and more specifically heist movies that involve the theft of gold bullion.

Classic Film Examples

Some of the most popular films of all time have, at their centre, focussed around gold bullion. Ian Flemings popular James Bond has in particular had many a mission focussed around the theft of gold bullion and 3 of the James Bond films even have gold in the title. Other classic films would include the Italian Job in which a group of trained thieves use the iconic Austin Mini to steal a consignment of precious gold. Bruce Willis character New York Cop, John McLain also got involved in the lust for gold bullion when he was tasked with the mission to apprehend the psychotic Simon Gruber played by Jeremy Irons in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

The Reasons Why

It certainly begs the question as to why so many films feel the need to have gold at their plots centre.  The main factor would surely be the value of gold bullion.  We all live in a world that recognises gold as being the most desired of all the precious metals and those banks have vaults of gold due to its high value and demand. It perhaps go’s a little deeper than just gold’s face value as well. Gold conjures up images of great wealth, gold jewellery, and gold leaf and in the case of the James Bond Film the World is Not Enough even gold teeth worn by the appropriately nicknamed villain MR Bullion. The fact so many Hollywood films continue to push gold as being an object of desire and great value only serves to fuel gold bullions reputation.

In a world that recognises many precious stones and metals such as diamonds, Gold Bullion and Platinum, it’s arguably gold that continues to steal the limelight, although diamonds run a close second. It will be interesting to see which new films come out of Hollywood’s doors that continue to elevate gold as the most desirable items in the world.
